Underneath every turf area is a small piece of civil engineering that no photograph will ever show you. Soil is removed to a working depth, crushed aggregate is placed in layers and compacted, the whole thing is graded to a chosen fall, and a route is decided for water once it passes through the turf. Get that right and the surface stays flat and drains for a long time. Get it wrong and no amount of quality in the turf above will save it.

This page exists because most turf failures are base failures, and homeowners rarely get to see the difference between a good base and a bad one. Both are covered by green fibers on the last afternoon of the job. The distinction only reveals itself later, in the low spot that holds water after a storm, the ripple that appears across a walking path, or the edge that lifts because nothing was restraining it.

What base and drainage work involves

  • Excavation to a working depth. Sod, roots and unstable topsoil come out. Depth is set by the soil, the use of the area and how much base the site needs, not by a habit carried from the last job.
  • Aggregate selection. The crushed material has to lock together under compaction while still letting water through. The blend matters, and too many fines will seal a base that was supposed to drain.
  • Compaction in lifts. Material goes in as layers and each one is compacted before the next. A base dumped to full depth and pressed once looks identical on day one and settles unevenly later.
  • Grading to a planned fall. The finished base is shaped so water moves in a direction someone chose, away from the house and toward a point where it can leave the area.
  • A route for the water. Turf drains through its backing, which only relocates the problem. Where clay or a flat site will not take the volume, a collection and outlet route gets built into the base.
  • Edge restraint and transitions. The perimeter has to hold the base in place and give the turf something to anchor to, especially where the area meets beds, borders or a change in elevation.

Read the site and the soil

Where does water go now, where does it stand after a storm, what is the soil made of, how much elevation change is there, and how will material get in and spoil get out.

Excavate and haul

Material comes out to depth. This is where clay, rock and buried surprises show up, and where a crew with a plan separates itself from one improvising with a shovel.

Place, compact, repeat

Aggregate goes down in lifts, each one compacted with a plate or roller and moisture managed so the material actually locks rather than just sitting there looking flat.

Grade, verify and finish

The surface is graded to fall, checked with a straightedge and a level rather than by eye, and refined until it is flat in the plane it is supposed to be flat in.

What it costs

Base work is where most of the money in a turf project actually goes, and the drivers are physical. Square footage sets the volume and required depth multiplies it, so a site needing deeper excavation costs meaningfully more than a shallow one. Soil type matters, because clay and rock are slower to remove than loose ground. Hauling counts twice, once for spoil going out and once for aggregate coming in. Whether the site needs a built drainage route or just a good grade is the biggest swing. And access decides the labor, since a yard a machine can enter is a different job from one served by wheelbarrow.

Questions people ask

Does artificial turf drain by itself?

The turf does, through perforations in its backing. That is not the same as the yard draining. Water still has to travel through the base and then leave the area, and if the ground below is heavy clay or the site is flat, it will sit there instead. Drainage has to be planned as a route with a destination, not treated as something the product handles.

What if my yard is heavy clay?

Clay is common in parts of the valley and it does not stop a turf install, it just changes the base design. Since the native soil will accept water slowly, the base has to hold and move it laterally to a place where it can leave. That usually means more excavation, careful aggregate selection and a built route rather than relying on the ground underneath.

Can a bad base be fixed without replacing the turf?

Sometimes. If the turf is in good shape and can be lifted carefully, a section can be rolled back, the base corrected and compacted, and the same turf relaid. It depends on the age and condition of the material, how it was seamed, and how much area is affected. Widespread settlement usually means the honest answer is a rebuild.

How can I tell the base was done properly?

Watch during the job rather than inspecting after it. You want to see material going in as layers with a compactor running between them, moisture used deliberately, and grade checked with a straightedge instead of an eyeball. Afterward, the test is a heavy rain: water should move to where the installer said it would go and leave nothing standing behind.
